Ubisoft Lays Off 40 Staff in Toronto, Splinter Cell Remake Continues
Ubisoft has confirmed layoffs at its Toronto studio. Around 40 employees are being let go. This is about 8% of the studio’s total staff.
Ubisoft Toronto is one of the company’s largest studios. It previously developed Watch Dogs: Legion and Far Cry 6. Despite the layoffs, Ubisoft says that the remake of Splinter Cell is still in development.
A company spokesperson said: “This decision was not taken lightly and does not in any way reflect the talent, dedication, or contributions of the individuals affected. Our priority now is to support them through this transition with comprehensive severance packages and robust career placement assistance.”
In an internal email, Ubisoft said that the Toronto studio will remain “a key contributor to several codev mandates and service teams.” The studio will also continue working on the Splinter Cell remake. The remake was first announced in 2021, and it recently appointed a new director.
When the project was announced, Ubisoft explained that Splinter Cell would be rebuilt using the Snowdrop engine. This engine is also used in The Division, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and Star Wars Outlaws. Ubisoft said the remake would “to deliver new-generation visuals and gameplay, and the dynamic lighting and shadows the series is known for”.
The layoffs at Ubisoft Toronto are part of a larger restructuring plan inside the company. Ubisoft recently announced a “major reset” of its business structure. The company plans to reorganize its creative teams into smaller, more independent “creative houses”.
As part of this restructuring, Ubisoft is also reducing costs. So far, the company has canceled six games and delayed seven others. Two studios have also been closed.
In addition, Ubisoft has proposed cutting up to 200 jobs at its headquarters in Paris, France. This would represent around 18% of staff at that location. The company says it aims to reduce its fixed costs by an additional €200 million over the next two years.
Even with these major changes and layoffs, Ubisoft insists that development on the Splinter Cell remake will continue.
