Destiny 2 Update Shadow and Order Delayed and Expanded

Bungie has delayed the next major update for Destiny 2 by more than three months. The update, called Shadow and Order, was originally planned for release on March 3. It will now launch on June 9.

Before the announcement, many players already expected a delay. Bungie had not shared much information about Shadow and Order. At the same time, the company recently announced that its new shooter, Marathon, will release only a few days after the original March 3 date. This made some fans believe that the update could be postponed.

On Wednesday, Bungie officially confirmed the delay. The studio said that Shadow and Order “is undergoing large revisions” and will now release in June.

Bungie also explained that the update is becoming bigger than originally planned.

“This update is being changed and expanded to include sizable quality-of-life updates and as a result, will also be renamed,” the studio said.

The company added that more detailed information will be shared closer to release. This will include updates about the previously announced Weapon Tier Upgrading system. Bungie also mentioned new additions such as expanding Tiered Gear to all Raid and Dungeon activities, Pantheon 2.0, Tier 5 stats for Exotic Armors, and more.

Bungie also confirmed that regular updates will continue until June. These include routine bug fixes and stability improvements, continued portal modifiers, Guardian Games in March, and a more frequent Iron Banner schedule starting in April.

The delay may disappoint many players. The Destiny 2 community is currently experiencing a content drought, meaning there is not much new content available. Player numbers have also been declining. This happened after the game’s original ten-year storyline ended last year.

Bungie began a new long-term story called The Fate Saga in July 2025 with the release of The Edge of Fate. The next expansion, Renegades, followed in December. Instead of releasing one large expansion each year, Bungie decided to release two mid-sized expansions per year.

However, Bungie admitted late last year that the start of The Fate Saga was not as strong as expected. In an interview with IGN, game director Tyson Green said that The Edge of Fate did not fully meet player expectations.

“The Final Shape brought things to a crescendo, where it’s like a fantastic ending that tied off a lot of the threads,” he said. “People were pleased and satisfied with what they played, and then the big [downwards] spike in population [came after]. That happened because we ended the saga. So you get what you pay for, right?

“That wasn’t the plan from the business perspective. We still want to keep making Destiny, we still have many stories to tell in this universe. There are still lots of things to do, and we have to keep building the game. Unfortunately, it was not gracefully managed, but we had to try something.”

With Shadow and Order now delayed and expanded, Bungie hopes the larger update and additional improvements will help strengthen Destiny 2 as it continues its new story direction.
