Nintendo Virtual Boy App Launches on Switch Online With 7 Games [1]

Nintendo has officially released its Virtual Boy app on Switch Online. This new app allows players to enjoy games from the company’s old Virtual Boy console, which was known as a commercial failure in the 1990s.

The app is called Virtual Boy: Nintendo Classics. It is now available to download from the eShop on both Switch and Switch 2.

To play the games, users must have a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Without this higher-tier subscription, the Virtual Boy games cannot be accessed.

In addition, players must buy a physical Virtual Boy accessory. This accessory is sold separately through the My Nintendo Store. The main version is a replica of the original Virtual Boy headset and costs $100 / £67. There is also a cheaper cardboard viewer available for $25 / £17.

At launch, seven Virtual Boy games are available:

  • 3D Tetris
  • Galactic Pinball
  • Golf
  • The Mansion of Innsmouth
  • Red Alarm
  • Teleroboxer
  • Virtual Boy Wario Land

Nintendo has confirmed that nine more games will be added in the future. These include:

  • Mario Clash
  • Mario’s Tennis
  • Jack Bros
  • Space Invaders Virtual Collection
  • Virtual Bowling
  • Vertical Force
  • V-Tetris
  • Zero Racer (previously unreleased)
  • D-Hopper (previously unreleased)

Since only 22 games were ever released for the original Virtual Boy console, adding nine more titles means players will soon have access to most of the system’s full library.

However, several games have not been confirmed for release on the service. These include Nester’s Funky Bowling, Panic Bomber, SD Gundam Dimension War, Space Squash, Virtual Fighting, Virtual Lab, Virtual League Baseball, and Waterworld. Some of these titles use licensed intellectual property, which may make future release difficult.

Nintendo also offers many other classic games through its online service. NES, SNES, Game Boy, and Game Boy Color titles are included in the standard Nintendo Switch Online subscription. The standard membership costs:

  • £3.49 / €3.99 / $3.99 for one month
  • £6.99 / €7.99 / $7.99 for three months
  • £17.99 / €19.99 / $19.99 for 12 months

To access Virtual Boy, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and Sega Mega Drive / Genesis games, players need the Expansion Pack add-on. This costs $49.99 / £34.99 / €39.99 per year.

With this new release, Nintendo is expanding its retro game library and giving players a chance to experience most of the Virtual Boy’s catalog in one place.
