[Game Review] - [Lost Ruins] - Cute girl in Scary New World

I do enjoy the pixel art style โ€” indie games tends to know how to use them masterfully (besides, pixel art saves a lot of time). Let us enter Lost Ruins, in this grimy world with โ€ฆ anime clothes and .. fanservice armorโ€ฆ.

Man why do I keep running into games that are like that โ€”

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

This game reminds me a lot of different Metroidvanias. The artstyle looks absolutely gorgeous (though. Again. I do not think this girl is capable of being unscathed with nothing but cute outfits--). Battles are not meant to be brute-forced, and the game encourages you to be strategic.

Items found around the world are not plentiful but almost always useful. The world also has quite a bit of isekai elements scattered around, with phones being used for storytelling and exposition dump if you want to read.

ABOUT LOST RUINS

Created by Korean company Altari Games, become lost within the hostile maze with no name and no memory. Similar to many 2D side scrollers where you fight through the world with nothing but determination and locking in.

!!!!Now, what do I think now that I have had some time to try out the game?

THE GAMEPLAY:

Strategy is key, as enemies tend to kill you in two hits or less. The environment is usually hostile and you can not run while attacking -- which does feel like you are a super static character. However, on top of weapons, you are provided with a lot of (limited, mind you) items, as well as environmental hazards that you can use against your enemies. Learning about an enemy's weaknesses is a must, if you don't, you will definitely have a hard time going through.

Attacking tends to be slow (mainly because I can not move while attacking), and your health pool is limited compare to many other games. Positioning is more important and learning enemy attack patterns is very encouraged, compared to just running into your problems straight on. So get good losers, it is not that hard (for legal reasons this is a joke).

I do enjoy the maze-esque world provided to me. Personally, I rarely get lost, but there are quite a bit of sprawling paths for you to go as you traverse the world. I find this to be my most favourite part of the game, since I do enjoy explorations and finding secrets. And boy did I found secrets! There is always a nook or cranny for me to jump in or roll into, if you keep your eyes peeled, and the reward is usually bountiful.

THE ARTSTYLE:

I do enjoy how detailed the pixel arts are. The environments are full of bits and pieces, as well as hints and plenty of hidden items for you to obtain. Color choices are amazing, creating unique areas and levels, and there are usually quite a few paths for you to take (as far as I can see). The pixel art lends very well to have a gritty, grimy world that your cute, adorable school girl can enter and traverse around.

Though. I will have to say. The game has. Quite a bit of fanservice. Does not matter, when all the characters are designed to be extremely cute --- wait a second. I see why we die so easily, no one is wearing proper armour!! I found a bikini.

I can not deny that everyone looks like a cute anime girl though. Like genuinely everyone looks cute.

The enemies are allowed to have quite a bit of variety to them, and I do love their animations! It is very expressive, and each enemy has their own fun attack pattern that makes learning them an amazing challenge for me so far. I have not gotten pass the early stages, but it has been amazing seeing a new enemy.

Oh, and can I just say I find the item sprites to be very cute? The item sprites and description are quite simple, but I do find them adorable.

THE STORY:

YOU!! Have no idea who you are or how you got here. There are so many hints around that points to someone bringing you here, and everything is carefully hidden in easy to miss walls or platforms. The story is sprinkled through out the world around you, creating intrigue and mystery. I hope I can uncover more as I continue playing, though.

The Heroine seems to be very important. Everything seems to be about her, from the various messages you found. Messages tends to be short and snappy, so if you ever have the time you should read in a little bit to clue you in about the world and setting, make the game much more alive.

Well, overall, Lost Ruins seems like a great Metroidvania so far! I have not gotten further in, so if you have, feel free to tell me about it in the comments below!
