Yakuza Kiwami 3 Adds 12 Playable Game Gear Games, Continuing Retro Tradition [1]
Yakuza Kiwami 3 will continue the series’ long tradition of playable classic Sega games. This time, players will be able to play games from the Sega Game Gear, marking the handheld’s first appearance in the series.
In past Yakuza / Like a Dragon games, players could enjoy many classic Sega arcade titles. These have included Out Run, Space Harrier, Fantasy Zone, Virtua Fighter 2, Super Hang-On, and Puyo-Puyo. These retro games have been a popular side activity in the series for many years.
The tradition changed slightly with Lost Judgment, where developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio added a Sega Master System to protagonist Takayuki Yagami’s office. Players could choose from eight classic 8-bit games, with four more added later as downloadable content.
This Master System feature also appeared in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, both of which allowed players to enjoy a selection of retro Master System games.
For Yakuza Kiwami 3, the studio has gone one step further by introducing a playable Sega Game Gear. The remake will include 12 Game Gear titles, including three guest games from Bandai Namco.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio confirmed on social media that the Namco titles Pac-Man, Mappy, and Galaga ’91 will be playable. Later, technical director Yutaka Ito shared the full list of all 12 included games.
The playable Game Gear games in Yakuza Kiwami 3 are:
- Columns
- Fantasy Zone Gear
- Galaga ’91
- The GG Shinobi
- G-LOC
- Mappy
- Pac-Man
- Puyo Puyo
- Sonic Chaos
- Sonic Drift
- Streets of Rage
- Woody Pop
Seven of these games — Columns, G-LOC, Mappy, Pac-Man, Puyo Puyo, Sonic Drift, and Streets of Rage — will support two-player split-screen multiplayer, allowing players to enjoy the retro games together.
Yakuza Kiwami 3 will launch on February 12 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, PS4, and PC.
The game is a full remake of Yakuza 3, which originally released on PS3 in 2009. In addition to the remake, it will also include Dark Ties, a brand-new spin-off game starring antagonist Yoshitaka Mine, offering new story content alongside the classic experience.
