Leon S. Kennedy is one of Resident Evil’s most iconic characters—but his first day at the Raccoon City Police Department (R.P.D.) didn’t exactly go as planned. Interestingly, the reason he arrived late depends on which timeline you follow.

In the original Resident Evil 2 (1998):
Leon was late because of a heartbreak. According to in-game files, the rookie cop had just gone through a painful breakup the night before heading to Raccoon City. He stopped at a roadside motel, drank too much, and overslept. Ironically, this very human mistake saved his life—by arriving late, Leon avoided the initial zombie outbreak and went on to meet the mysterious Ada Wong.

In the Resident Evil 2 Remake (2019):
Leon is portrayed as more professional. He wasn’t drunk at all—he was waiting for orders. R.P.D. had called him and told him not to come to the city. After days of silence, Leon sensed something was wrong and decided to drive to Raccoon City on his own. Despite walking straight into a zombie apocalypse on day one, he immediately stepped up to protect survivors and help his fellow officers.

A darkly ironic detail:
Leon’s iconic blue uniform was actually meant for a welcome party prepared by his colleagues. Inside the station, you can still spot a banner that reads “Welcome Leon.” Sadly, that celebration turned into one of the bloodiest nightmares in gaming history.
