Yakuza Kiwami 3 Remake Adds Dark Ties Story and Major Gameplay Upgrades
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio will release Yakuza Kiwami 3 on February 12, giving Yakuza 3 a full modern remake. The original game first launched in 2009, and many players felt a big drop in quality after playing Yakuza 0, Kiwami, and Kiwami 2.
The remake improves graphics, adds new cutscenes, and updates gameplay to match newer titles in the series. It also introduces a new team battle mode, where players fight together with the Ryukyu Gal Gang, a group of female bikers.
New fighting styles are included. Kazuma Kiryu gains the Dragon of Dojima: Kiwami style, which Sega says will have “the largest number of attack techniques in the series’ history”. There is also a new Ryukyu Style, which focuses on weapon-based combat using eight different weapon types.
The biggest new feature is Dark Ties, a completely new second story. This mode stars Yoshitaka Mine, a main villain from Yakuza 3, as the protagonist. The story is a prequel that shows Mine’s past and what happened before the main game.
Dark Ties includes a new fighting style for Mine, called Dark Awakening, an underground fight club named Hell’s Arena, and a dungeon-style mode called Survival Hell.
Director Ryosuke Horii said Dark Ties was first planned as a non-playable video. However, the team decided to make it playable because they felt “if we miss this opportunity, we won’t have another chance”.
With improved visuals, expanded story content, and familiar combat and side activities, Yakuza Kiwami 3 aims to appeal to both new players and long-time fans in 2026.
