📰 Steam Data Shows Players Prefer Older Games Over New 2025 Releases
Steam has revealed an interesting trend about player behavior in 2025: gamers are spending far more time on older titles than on newly released games. According to Valve’s Steam Replay 2025 data, only 14% of total playtime this year was spent on games launched in 2025.
The remaining majority of playtime went to previously released titles. Specifically, 44% of total playtime was spent on games released 1–7 years ago (2018–2024), while another 40% went to games released 8 years ago or earlier. This clearly shows that back-catalog and “classic” titles continue to dominate player engagement on Steam.
The reasons are not hard to understand. Older games are often well-optimized, content-complete, and frequently available at deep discounts. More importantly, many of them were designed around strong gameplay rather than trying to aggressively cater to so-called “modern audience” trends, which can sometimes alienate long-time players.
This data highlights a growing reality of the PC market: longevity matters more than launch hype. For developers and publishers, maintaining long-term quality, mod support, and fair monetization may be just as important—if not more—than chasing blockbuster releases.
