Yuji Horii wants to add an AI chatbot to a future Dragon Quest-style game
Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii says he’s thinking about adding an AI chatbot to one of his future games. Horii spoke at the G-Star event in South Korea, and his comments were recently shared by Famitsu.
Horii said he has been impressed by modern AI tools, including ChatGPT, and explained that AI “handles all sorts of consultations in a very logical way”. He said he uses ChatGPT himself, and knows many people use it for casual conversation.
Because of this, Horii said he’s interested in making a quiz or mystery game where the AI helps the player talk through clues.
“It would be interesting if we could use that kind of AI to, for example, play quiz games or mystery games where you have to find the culprit,” he said. He added that the AI could handle interrogations and report back to the player, making the gameplay feel like solving a case through conversation.
When asked directly if he was thinking about adding AI to his future games, Horii reportedly said “yes”.
Horii also mentioned that he’s considering VR, but finds wearing a VR headset uncomfortable and is unsure how to use it well. He said he believes games will eventually “step beyond the monitor” and connect more with real life.
Last month, Horii received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, from the Japanese government for his work on the Dragon Quest series. He is the first game designer to receive this honour.
Horii has worked on every mainline Dragon Quest game since 1986 and co-owns the franchise with Square Enix through his company Armor Project.
