Helldivers 2 PC install size cut by over 80% after new storage update
Arrowhead Game Studios says the PC version of Helldivers 2 will soon take much less storage space.

In a new update on Steam, deputy technical director Brendan Armstrong said the team has reduced the install size from about 154 GB to around 23 GB.
Back in October, Armstrong explained that the PC version was much larger than the console version because many PC players still use HDDs. To make loading faster on HDDs, the game duplicated many assets, which increased the file size.
Now, after working with Nixxes, Arrowhead has found a way to remove most of the duplicated data. Armstrong says the new “slim” version is only 17% of the old size, and HDD loading times are only “a few seconds” slower.
He explained: “‘Wait a minute… didn’t you just tell us all that you duplicate data because the loading times on HDDs could be 10 times worse?’ I am pleased to say that our worst case projections did not come to pass.”
He added that real tests showed only around 11% of current players use HDDs, and that most loading time in the game comes from level generation, not reading assets.
The smaller version is not fully released yet, but a public beta is now available. Players can try it without losing progress, purchases, or matchmaking access. If problems appear, they can switch back anytime.
Arrowhead says the slim version will become the default for everyone once testing is complete. However, players using mods may want to stay on the full-size version until the rollout is finished.
