Paramount plans a mysterious Sonic movie spin-off for release in 2028
Paramount Pictures is making a fifth Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

The new film does not have a title yet and is called a “Sonic Universe feature”, which suggests it is a spin-off. It is planned to release on December 22, 2028.
Before that, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is scheduled for March 19, 2027.
The Sonic movies have been very successful, so it makes sense that Paramount wants to grow the franchise. Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released last December, is the highest-earning film in the series and has made over $1 billion worldwide.
The first movie, released in February 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, made $319.7 million globally. The second movie, released in April 2022, made $319 million.
All three movies were directed by Jeff Fowler and star Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik and Ben Schwartz as Sonic. Carrey has recently said he may return for another Sonic film.
Sonic is also a strong brand outside of movies. Sega says it earns nearly $1 billion each year from Sonic toys, clothing, and other merchandise.
