Dan Houser says AI leaders “aren’t the most humane or creative people”
Former Rockstar Games writer Dan Houser has shared more concerns about generative AI. In a radio interview, he talked about his new book A Better Paradise Volume One: An Aftermath, which includes a story about a game project where its AI becomes too powerful.
When asked if AI could ever replace the “human spirit”, Houser agreed that it cannot. He said the people pushing AI forward are not always experts in creativity or humanity.
He explained: “Some of these people trying to define the future of humanity, creativity, or whatever it is using AI are not the most humane or creative people.”
He added that these people act like “we’re better at being human than you are,” which he said is not true. He believes humanity is being guided by people who “maybe aren’t fully rounded humans.”
When asked if AI will really become as successful as its supporters claim, Houser said he doesn’t think so. He said AI may eventually damage itself because models keep taking data from the internet, and the internet will slowly fill with AI-made content.
He compared it to feeding cows with cows and getting mad cow disease. He said he cannot see how the information will improve when models are already “running out of data”.
Houser also said AI is very good at some tasks, but it will not be great at everything.
Last week, he made similar comments, saying that while some AI tools are impressive, others are not as useful as companies claim. He said many AI promises are made to “sell AI stock”. He also noted that technology often gets easy progress at first, but the final parts- making something truly realistic - are always very difficult.
