[Review] - [Abyss Seeker] - Shoot and survive!

I finally got my hands on Abyss Seeker, the Heaven Seeker spin-off. I will be honest, I have yet tried the original, but the spin-off has already caught my attention with its cheap price and pretty pixel art, so why not try it out.

Let's jump right in, shall we?

ABOUT ABYSS SEEKER

Abyss Seeker twin-stick survival shooter from SUCCESS Corp. You control a Seeker and enter the dungeon named Abyss and descend down, shooting enemies and survive within a limited timeframe.

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The game starts off with a little story section, and why you are here. I personally find story sections very interesting, and would really like to know more about the lore of the game!

However there is one glaring issue (which is not a major issue, mind you) is that the font used in the English settings are horrendously difficult to read. I find the lore of the game interesting, however this part is not user friendly at all.

But it doesn't matter!

Because the gameplay is absolutely amazing!

You have this little cute girl shooting for you and within a time limit you must survive for as long as possible. The controls are easy and the learning curve is quite fast. I like how intuitive the controls are.

Along the shooting and dodging, you can accumulate power to cast an AoE attack, decimating all the enemies on the screen. This is my favourite part of the game, because it makes you feel quite powerful! The AoE is quite large, and the power comes in a clutch everytime I get cornered by multiple enemies.

However, since the fonts are not that easy to read, I did not know how to use the extra controls such as bombing or even the AoE attack when I first played. (You will notice that this is a recurring issue, haha. The Korean and Japanese fonts were easier to parse I think, but I am more proficient in English.)

You shoot, dodge, and collect EXP on the ground, and get more powerful as you try to stay alive.

Every time you reach a certain threshold, you get to exchange it for cards and buffs. Arguably the best part, I get to upgrade and change what I can do. These buffs are similar to roguelike buffs, and do change your playstyle quite a bit. There are buffs that make you shoot faster or maybe a buff that gives you the ability to shoot two bullets at once.

Based on the buffs available, there seems to be a few cards made for bosses, however, since this is a first impressions review, I never actually got far enough. :(

Outside of combat, you have a little shop that sells Magics, Artifacts and Skills. These are either card buffs or permanant buffs, which makes you stronger the more you play. There are buffs that makes it easier to survive the multiple enemies approaching, or buffs that makes your bullets shoot faster.

!!!!Now, what do I think now that I have had some time to try out the game?

THE ARTSTYLE:

Abyss Seeker has your typical Anime Art Style for most of its promotion and menus. Which is all fine and dandy, however this style is overused and overdone accross many games. So the thing that really sets this game apart is the atmospheric pixel art. The environment looks like a fantasy dungeon mixed with a bit of futuristic sci-fi, so everything looks like an isekai. I find the sprite of the tiny player character that they gave me (a Seeker named Alcea) absolutely adorable, and I love how the set up for going down the areas builds a bit of mystery from the slight creepiness.

THE SOUND DESIGN:

I like how the EDM music hypes you up and the way the bullets sound. EXP collecting on the ground sounds satisfactory as well as when you use your powerful attack. I do say that since it is a looping track, I get bored after a few rounds of listening to it.

THE GAMEPLAY:

I find the gameplay quite engaging - it is fast paced and you can not sit in one spot, you are constantly moving around and constantly shooting. What I like about the card buffs between the game is that you must think and choose which card you want to move along with, as the game have limited card slots. Some cards gets better with stacks, some decrease one aspect of your gameplay in exchange for a buff, some are situational. All of these make you pause and think, meaning it is not mindless shooting. The enemies gets harder the longer you try to survive, and for me, the last few minutes of surviving a map was extremely chaotic, full of different difficult enemies and trying my very best to dodge the onslaught of evil creatures coming my way. Dodging gets increasingly harder, which is what makes it fun and challenging as time goes on.

THE STORY:

While this game does not focus on the story, there is enough mystery in the world design and aesthestic that would lead people questioning what is going on in this world. I can not wait until I get far enough to unlock more stories and more buffs.

All and all, while it does have a few weak points, Abyss Seeker's cheap price and engaging gameplay means that I highly recommend this game.

Have you played Abyss Seeker? I can not claim to know this game inside and out, so I hope to see what your thoughts on it! Discussion open below!
