CM Flint’s Treasure Hunt: Real-Life Locations Featured in Video Games [3]
What’s up! CM Flint here.
Are you all enjoying the refreshing fall weather of September?
With many opportunities to take a break this month, what better way to spend them than gaming?
Lately, I’ve been trying out various games, and with the advancement of technology, some of these games have graphics that are nearly indistinguishable from reality.
As a result, many in-game locations are actual places brought to life with stunning accuracy.
Today, I’ve put together a list of real-world places featured in video games.
Some of these are well-known tourist spots, while others have gained fame thanks to the games they appeared in.
I got curious, so I decided to explore these real-life locations that serve as the backdrop for popular games!
1. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – New York
Marvel’s Spider-Man already received praise for its faithful recreation of New York City, but in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the game takes it a step further by adding Queens County into the mix.
The richer colors and updated cityscapes make New York feel like an entirely different location compared to the first game.
What’s particularly exciting for Spider-Man fans is that this is the first time Queens has been featured in a Spider-Man game since 2005’s Ultimate Spider-Man.
In Spider-Man 2, you can freely explore Queens, which plays a pivotal role in the early stages of the game, much to the excitement of fans.
2. Kingdom Come: Deliverance – Sázava Monastery
Next up is the Sázava Monastery, a real-world location featured in Kingdom Come: Deliverance, which is currently available on the STOVE store.
The monastery, founded in 1032 by Duke Břetislav I of Bohemia, is located about 30 kilometers southeast of Prague, Czech Republic, and is one of the oldest Benedictine monasteries in the country.
As Kingdom Come: Deliverance gained popularity, so did tourism to the Sázava Monastery, with many visitors stating in their reviews that the game inspired their trip.
If you plan to visit, guides are available every 15-30 minutes, and the entrance is free!
3. Dark Souls Series – George Peabody Library
The Dark Souls series, renowned for being a genre and its exceptional game quality, is beloved by gamers worldwide.
While I’ve only played Dark Souls III and Elden Ring, one iconic location from the first Dark Souls game is The Duke’s Archives, inspired by the George Peabody Libraryin Baltimore, USA.
Though the in-game version is not an exact replica, the George Peabody Library served as inspiration for this iconic area.
While the real library doesn’t have grand spiral staircases, the sight of rows upon rows of books mirrors the game’s aesthetic.
4. Black Myth: Wukong – Shanxi Province, China
The recently released Black Myth: Wukong, launched last month for Steam, Xbox, and PS5, features many Buddhist temples and statues rooted in Chinese culture and mythology.
While these locations may seem entirely fictional, they’re actually based on real places in Shanxi Province, China.
Due to the massive success of Black Myth: Wukong worldwide, interest in these locations has surged, prompting Shanxi’s Department of Culture and Tourism to collaborate with the game to develop tourism programs.
They’ve even announced a special event titled "Follow in Black Myth: Wukong’s Footsteps to Explore Shanxi."
So if you’re interested, it’s definitely worth looking into!
Aside from these, many real-world locations are brought to life in video games.
Today, I’ve shared a few places that particularly caught my interest.
There’s something exciting about seeing real locations recreated in a game—it almost makes you want to visit them yourself!
While it’s not always easy to travel to these places, especially if they’re overseas, the idea is still pretty thrilling.
Have you ever played a game that featured a place you wanted to visit in real life?
