So I got lucky and managed to pull the ML5 I wanted and I want to get the dupe coins as I am 10 away from getting 40 coins. If I buy the dupe from the shop, I should get the coins, right?

No. Characters that you get appart from summons and tickets are not counted as dupes. Also, if you buy a hero from the shop and you get a dupe later from summons it doesnt count as a dupe.
Only heroes that you summon are counted for the dupe system.

Nope. We had another person who had the same idea as you during Round 1 banner, but unfortunately he didn't ask before dumping all his mystics for nothing trying to get a dupe for coins. The text states you get a coin after "summoning" the ml5 twice.
