When starting the game, go at your own pace, when you are stuck just follow the orbis guide as it provides a very comprehensive and good guide for how to progress. Play how you want, the story is nice with voice acting, you can go through the game entirely free to play, or you could spend if you feel like it. If you want to spend, I would recommend the epic pass as the value of those are the best, but please only spend if you are able to and want to. 

Most importantly is to just have fun and play how you want to! Join a guild or community and you can progress and learn from others too. Have fun and welcome to EpicSeven! :)
